“”Whatever He says to you, do it.”
John 2:5b
The festivities surrounding a newlywed couple seemed to have reached their climax and were about to be cut short. The lack of wine had caught the attention of the mother of our Lord Jesus, and Mary was sure to let Jesus know. Not put off by our Lord’s cryptic response, she turned to the wedding servants. It would not hurt a single soul to heed the words of Mary: ‘Whatever He says to you, do it.’ Believer, consider the scope of Christian duty. Whatever the Lord commands us, we are to do. Is that not why we call Him Lord? Is He not only the Lord of nature, but also the Lord of your soul?
What were the servants told? ‘Fill the waterpots with water.’ And they listened to Jesus. They didn’t remain idle; they did what was commanded of them. They did not fill those waterpots a quarter-full or half-full. This was no half-hearted activity. No, they filled them to the brim. You can imagine the water spilling as they returned to the wedding feast with those six heavy waterpots of stone.
Filling some jars with water. Did our Lord not know there was no shortage of water but of wine? And to send some servants sweating and toiling with dozens of gallons of water—what was that about? How was water going to help? Then He told them to draw some out. For what exactly? Hadn’t these waterpots for purification served their use at this ceremony? No interrogation of our Lord’s motives is recorded for us, nor shall we bring accusation to Him here.
My soul, wait silently for God alone,
For my expectation is from Him.Psalm 62:5
Whatever expectation of Jesus was found among those servants, it was not wrongly placed. They drew out the finest wine, which occasioned the highest compliments from the master of the feast. Jesus had turned the water into wine and manifested His glory as God incarnate. The joy Jesus brings to those who believe in Him—is that not enough reason to do whatever He says? To hear and to do. Commands grounded in love first shown to us before we had an ounce of strength to walk in His ways. Through His atoning death and resurrection, Jesus has won for us the Spirit of God to make us spiritually alive. And He dwells in us who believe, and He witnesses to our souls of these precious truths.
Prophets of God went before Jesus, and none was greater than His cousin, John the Baptist. But all were like plain water compared to the finest wine—Jesus Himself, distinguished among ten thousand and like none other. Come, my soul, and behold your Lord. ‘Whatever He says to you, do it.’ If the name of Jesus is sweet to you, then be swift to keep His word. O my soul, He not only commands you; He also aids you. Come to Him and find all that is necessary to strengthen you in your service to Him. And you too shall taste of divine treasures, even of the LORD Himself.
Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him.Psalm 34:8
